Do you want to be part of a team which delivers innovative products and machine learning solutions across Microsoft to hundreds of millions of users every month? Microsoft Search Relevance team is at the forefront of the core copilot experiences across Microsoft products including Copilot Chat and Search accelerating productivity to help users find the right information in their organization.
As an Applied Scientist II in Microsoft Search Relevance team, you will work with other scientists to solve challenging problems that can delight Copilot Search and Chat users. Some high-level examples include model adaptation of the state-of-the-art vector search algorithm into an enterprise domain and applying advanced ML (machine learning) to improve the retrieval quality of business-critical information by jointly optimizing query understanding and the retrieval algorithm. You will also be deeply involved with a platform team to accelerate the speed of evaluation of the retrieval algorithms at scale.

Responsibilities
You will gain expertise in one or more subareas of research and understand applicable research techniques. You’ll also gain deep knowledge of a service, platform, or domain, and become familiar with the latest industry trends and applied technologies.
You will apply strategies provided by senior team members and incorporate state-of-the-art techniques. You’ll also develop an understanding of customer pain points in Copilot Chat and Search and design an algorithm to improve search quality end-to-end while gaining expertise in a deeply specialized area.
As you reinforce a positive environment by applying best practices, you will also support mentorship and assist with the onboarding of entry-level team members. Additionally, you will maintain ties with an external network of peers and identify prospective talent, when asked.
You will document work in progress and share findings to promote innovation within a group. You’ll also learn and follow ethics and privacy policies while executing research processes or collecting information.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree in Statistics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 2+ years related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)
OR Master's Degree in Statistics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 1+ year(s) related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)
OR Doctorate in Statistics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field
OR equivalent experience.
2+ years experience in shipping applied research to production, highlighting combining coding skills with advanced expertise in AI model development.
Other Requirements:
Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:
Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Active research or experiences of successful applied science projects in one or more of the following areas: Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Information Retrieval, Machine Learning, or Natural Language Processing.
Applied Sciences IC3 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $100,600 - $199,000 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $131,400 - $215,400 per year.
