Efforts by government agencies to maximize efficiency mean money for MAXIMUS. The company gets about two-thirds of its sales from its health services segment, which offers outsourced program management and administrative services, mainly to government agencies responsible for health and human services programs. Its human services segment provides administrative – more... and consulting support to welfare-to-work programs, child support enforcement, and higher education and K-12 special education schools. Operating through more than 220 offices, MAXIMUS gets more than 70% of its revenue from the US, where the company has drawn clients from all 50 states. It also has won contracts in Australia, Canada, Israel, and the UK.
MAXIMUS conducts consulting and programs management services for government-sponsored programs such as Medicaid, Medicare, the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP), and Welfare-to-Work. It hopes to continue to benefit from the trend toward outsourcing of administrative functions by government agencies. However, the company faces the risk of losing business when economic downturns lead to spending cuts by state and local governments. On the bright side, however, MAXIMUS believes it is well positioned to take advantage of the Affordable Care Act, the law passed in 2010 expanding health coverage to more than 30 million Americans.Â
In early 2010, MAXIMUS acquired Canadian-based DeltaWare Systems, a provider of health care software enabling government users to manage health and medical files, records, and claims. The deal strengthened MAXIMUS' product reach in North America.
As part of the effort to concentrate on its core operations, MAXIMUS sold its security systems integration and aviation planning and consulting businesses in 2008. It also sold its asset management, education, and justice systems units to Constellation Software for $40 million.
