Children's Hospital and Regional Medical Center was a big name for little kids, so they changed it to what everyone already used: Seattle Children's Hospital. The hospital, which has some 250 beds, serves children and infants of all ages. Its specialty units include psychiatric care, neonatal intensive care, and rehabilitation for children disabled – more... by injuries, illness, or congenital complications. In addition to its primary campus, Seattle Children's Hospital operates numerous outpatient clinics in the Puget Sound area. It also provides outreach services throughout the Pacific Northwest as well as in Alaska and Montana. Seattle Children's Hospital provides telemedicine services in Idaho.

Geographic Reach

Seattle Children's Hospital serves the largest landmass of any children's hospital in the country (Washington, Alaska, Montana, and Idaho).

Its outreach clinics in Alaska and Montana provide specialty care through physicians and nurses who travel to rural communities in each state. In Idaho videoconferencing brings specialty services to rural communities that would not otherwise have access to them.

Sales and Marketing

The hospital runs a program called the Medical-Legal Partnership for Children that provides assistance to low-income families with children receiving medical treatment at its Odessa Brown Children's Clinic (OBCC) or its Harborview Children and Teens Clinic (HCTC).

Through the project, patients facing family law issues such as custody, domestic abuse, or access to public benefits, are provided an attorney through the Northwest Justice Project. In addition, a staff attorney trains physicians and social workers to recognize legal problems that may affect a child's health, and also provide direct legal services and referrals for patients at OBCC and HCTC.

Financial Analysis

In 2011 the company reported $1.26 billion in revenue. About 46% of revenue came from Medicaid payments while roughly 47% of revenue came from private insurance and managed care payors.

The hospital brought in nearly $70 million in research awards during 2011.

Strategy

Seattle Children's keeps expanding throughout its service areas by opening additional clinics (urgent care, specialty, and primary care). For example, in 2010 the company opened the Bellevue Clinic and Surgery Center. The pediatric specialty clinic offers more than 15 medical specialties as well as urgent care, radiology, surgery, and physician therapy.

The hospital is also increasing the size of its main hospital by adding an additional 350 beds in four phases over the next two decades. Once the project is complete, Seattle Children's will house roughly 600 beds -- something the medical providers there will welcome since the hospital operates at near capacity the majority of the time.
